There are many activities and places of interest in and around Douglas, which is 100 kilometres from Kimberley on the way to Upington and the Kalahari Gemsbok Park.

Established in 1968, the Douglas Wine Cellar is one of the oldest cellars north of the Orange River and produces a wide variety of wines. The Ghaap Restaurant in Douglas is famous for its delicious steaks.

De Pont Restaurant is situated at Broadwaters, a private river escape on the banks of the Vaal River near Douglas and Kimberley. The DaRiva houseboat has a skipper at your service and access to 50 kilometres of fishing waters teeming with diverse birdlife too. If you are lucky, you may even spot the Vaal River's own 'Big Five' - the otter, African Fish Eagle, Giant Kingfisher, Goliath Heron and Iguana - on a sunset river cruise.

A trip to the Northern Cape would be incomplete without including a visit to the Big Hole in Kimberley. An entirely man-made structure, the Big Hole is the largest hand-dug excavation in the world. The world-renowned McGregor Museum in Kimberley affords visitors a fascinating glimpse into the bygone days of the diamond rush and has made important contributions to the ecological and historical knowledge of the Northern Cape.
